Our volunteers are our greatest strength!
Volunteers bring the Hans Herr House Museum to life by leading tours, demonstrating cultural traditions, maintaining buildings and artifacts and managing the books and paperwork that keep the organization viable.
In the act of volunteering, volunteers share in the joy of entertaining
others and learn of themselves as they teach those around them. Volunteers personally meet and interact with guests who travel from around the world to visit this historical destination.
Volunteer to suit your schedule
We are looking for persons to work half-days (usually from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. or from 12:30 to 4 p.m.) or full days (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) as either gift-shop and ticket sales managers or guides for tours of the 1719 House. We are working to grow an active volunteer staff of sixty people to meet these needs. We would like to encourage those who can do so to volunteer on a consistent schedule – for example, every Monday, every other Tuesday, or the third Friday of every month.
On days when school groups schedule visits to the Museum we require additional staff; typically we need two persons beyond the regular tour guide. Days of school group visits might also be opportunities for brief demonstrations of colonial-era crafts.
Come as you are
No prior experience is necessary. Hans Herr House staff provides free training for all volunteers.

We couldn't do it without you
Without volunteers, the Hans Herr House would simply be another museum,
void of the stories and demonstrations that animate the history of
Colonial Lancaster County.
