A special consignment of early Mennonite books from the Netherlands will appear at our September 11, 2020 book auction. These books, written in Dutch and published in Amsterdam, are of particular interest:
Martyrs’ Mirror (1685 edition) entitled Het Bloedig Tooneel, of Martelaers Spiegel der Doops-Gesinde of Weerloose Christenen. This is the second edition of the Martyrs’ Mirror, and the first one containing the 104 etchings of Jan Luyken.
T Merg van de Historien der Martelaren, edited by J. Bout and published in 1736. It is an abridgment of the much larger Martyrs’ Mirror. It measures only 6 ½ inches tall. For this volume, an unknown artist made smaller, simplified, and reversed copies of half of Jan Luyken’s etchings, according to James W. Lowry (Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage, October 2002). There is a reference to the Mennonite congregation of Westzaandam printed in the front of the book.
Opera Omnia Theologica, of Alle de Godtgeleerde Wercken van Menno Symons, (The Complete Works of Menno Simons), published in 1681. The book has been finely restored and rebound with ornate clasps and intricate tooling on the covers.
Our auctions offer a wide variety of books, many related to Mennonite, Amish, or local history. Family histories on this sale include the three-volume Valentine Metzler and Anna Nissley Genealogy, The Wenger Book with the index volume, and A Branch of the Zimmerman Offspring by Ezra Zimmerman. There is a copy of The Earth is the Lord’s by John Ruth, and there are significant collections of tractor and railroad books.
